MALAY PERSONALITY PROJECT

Updated: Feb 7, 2020

The personality assessment practices in Malaysia have been very much imposed-etic in nature where western-based personality inventories are adapted for use in the local context. Most of personality inventories are founded on the mainstream personality taxonomies, i.e., the Big-5 personality dimensions, abbreviated as the Big-5 OCEAN (Openness, Conscientiousness,Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism) and the Big-6 personality model, abbreviated as Big-6 HEXACO (Honesty-Humility, Emotionality, eXtraversion, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness and Opennes s). These taxonomies may not realistically, and to certain extent, unable to truly depict the Malay personality. This inspires academics at the Department of Psychology, IIUM to explore indigenous Malay personality taxonomy and eventually develop indigenous measure for use in Malaysian context.
