Understanding teaching and learning process in Malaysian Higher Learning Institutions

Updated: Feb 7, 2020

Behavioural scientists play significant roles in the efforts to change, improve, and develop work process, system, and services within an organisation or society. A new research by Department of Psychology's members, in collaboration with a group of academics from other universities, investigated the extent to which the teaching and learning (T&L) process in Malaysian Higher Learning Institutions has undergone change, improvement, and development. The study has assessed the ways T&L process is conducted in Malaysian HLIs. It also studied the extent to which the agenda has brought about the world-class mentality among HLI community and identified the ways the T&L agenda has changed and developed the higher education (HE) capacity, especially among the teaching members. Besides, the study assessed how the T&L agenda has impacted the quality of life among students.

Data were gathered from students from several Malaysian HLIs. The findings have highlighted five main themes (New Culture of T&L in HLIs, World Class Mentality, Capacity Building, T&L for Quality of Life, and Moving up the Value chain in the T&L). Each of them addresses the key issues, challenges, impacts, and recommendations for the way forward. The information of both strengths and weaknesses in the T&L process is expected to assist curriculum developers, HLI leaders, policymakers, and academics in strategising the way forward for effective T&L approaches at higher education level.
